Suhas Pandurang Sukhatme (English: Suhas Pandurang Sukhatme, born November 5, 1938) is an Indian scientist, teacher, writer and former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of the Government of India. He is known for his expertise in heat transfer and energy technologies. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in the year 2001.

  • Suhas Pandurang Sukhatme was born on 5 November 1938 in Maharashtra to Indumati Sukhatme and Pandurang Vasudev Sukhatme, a renowned statistician and Padma Bhushan awardee.
  • Suhas Pandurang Sukhatme graduated in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi in 1958 and pursued his higher education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • He earned a master’s degree (SM) in 1960, a higher degree in engineering in 1961, and a doctoral degree in 1964.
  • During his stay at MIT he also worked as a research assistant. He moved to Dynatech Corporation where he worked as a staff engineer for a year.
  • In 1965 he returned to India to join the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • After retirement from IIT Bombay, Suhas Pandurang Sukhatme served as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of the Government of India from 2000 to 2005.
