Know the story of the fallen holy temple on Veer Savarkar Jayanti, still gives the message of social equality today
patit Pavan Mandir Ratnagiri: On 28 May 2025, we are celebrating the 142nd birth anniversary of Veer Savarkar. This superstar of the freedom struggle is often known for his political views and revolutionary activities, but his contribution to social reforms is equally important. The fallen holy temple at Ratnagiri is a vibrant example of this, a temple that set a new example of social harmony by breaking the walls of the caste system. Veer Savarkar started working towards social reforms while being under house arrest in Ratnagiri after he was released from Andaman’s Cellular Jail in 1924. At that time, untouchability and caste discrimination in Hindu society was deeply prevalent. Savarkar raised his voice against this injustice and envisaged a temple where people of all castes could worship equally.
To realize this idea, he received support from Ratnagiri’s liberal businessman Mr. Bhagojisheth Keer. The foundation of the temple was laid by Shankaracharya Dr. Kurtakoti on 10 March 1929 and it was inaugurated on 22 February 1931. Statues of Lakshmi-Narayan were installed in the temple, and it was named Purifier, which means “the safety of the fallen”.
Temple characteristics
The biggest feature of the impure holy temple was that it was equally open to all castes. The trustee board of the temple consisted of representatives of Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras and so -called untouchable castes. There was no caste restriction for worship, and any Hindu, irrespective of caste, could enter the temple and do worship.
Savarkar started the Akhil Hindu Ganeshotsav in the temple complex, which was held from 1930 to 1937. The purpose of this festival was to promote social unity by bringing people of all castes together. Bhajan, kirtan, cultural programs and lectures were organized during the festival, in which people of all castes participated.
Today’s form of the impure holy temple
Today the fallen holy temple is not only a religious place, but it has become a symbol of social harmony and equality. The memorial of Veer Savarkar is also located in the temple premises, where his life and freedom struggle are reflected. This place is a source of inspiration for the youth, which guides the direction of understanding and adopting the values of social justice and equality.
