First story: It is said that when the poison came out after churning the sea, Lord Shiva held this poison in his throat only to save the entire creation. Due to the effect of poison, his throat turned blue and his entire body became extremely hot, due to which the surrounding environment also started heating up. Since Belpatra reduces the effect of poison, all the gods and goddesses started feeding Belpatra to Shiva. Along with Belpatra, water was also offered on him to keep Shiva cool. Due to the effect of Belpatra and water, the heat generated in Bholenath’s body started to calm down and from then on Shiva, the practice of offering water and bell -leaf on Shivji started.

Second story: According to another legend, there was a robber named Bhil. This robber used to rob people to raise their family. Once when it was the month of Sawan, this bandit named Bhil went to the forest for the purpose of robbing passers -by. For this, he climbed on a tree and sat down. On seeing this, he did not get any victim even after a whole day and the whole night passed. Due to the passing of night and day, he got upset and broke the bell leaves and started throwing it down. A Shivling was installed under the same tree. The Bhils who were breaking the leaves and throwing down were falling on shivaling, and Bhil was completely unaware of this. Lord Shiva was pleased after falling on the Shivalinga, the vine leaves being thrown by Bhil and suddenly appeared in front of the robber. Lord Shiva asked the Bhil dacoit to ask for a boon, and saved the Bhil. Just from that day, the importance of offering bell -leaf to Lord Shiva increased further.
