Know who was Dada Saheb Phalke, in whose name is the most prestigious award of Indian cinema
Dadasaheb Phalke, considered the father of Indian cinema, was born on 30 April 1870 in a Brahmin family in Trimbakeshwar village of Nashik district. Dadasaheb Phalke’s full name was Dhundiraj Govind Phalke. According to family tradition, he was taught Sanskrit and priestly at home.
His interest in painting, theatrical, acting and magic became engrossed. He came to Bombay when his father Daji Shastri became a Sanskrit professor at Elphinstone College. After passing the 10th examination, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke took admission in the famous art school of Bombay in JJ School of Arts. Cinematography with fine arts attracted him specifically. After this, he went to Kala Bhavan in Baroda and seeing extraordinary interest in shading, Principal Prof. Gajjar handed over the cinematography to him.
Scholarship bought camera
Dadasaheb Phalke made a lot of information material available in the cinematography laboratory and library there. He also bought a camera from the scholarship he received in 1890. He also took training in modeling and architecture.
In the 16 years after the end of the study, Dadasaheb Phalke tried his luck in various businesses. He shared her by staying in Bombay. Make landscape on the theater curtains. It is said that he also received the award in the competition held in Ahmedabad for the design of a set.
Dadasaheb Phalke also learned magic
Dadasaheb Phalke stayed in Godhra for a few days and tried his hand on photography. In Pune in 1903, worked as a drafts man and photographer in the Department of Archeology of Governance. Meanwhile, in 1901, a German magician met such that he became a disciple. He learned many egozalic tips and specialized in magic.
Dadasaheb Phalke had a profound influence of Lokmanya Tilak. He was not happy with his government job. He quit his job. Meanwhile, the colorful paintings of the deities of King Ravi Varma were celebrated. People were buying a large number of pictures. Ravi Verma started his lithography press. In this, Regent and Diwan Sir Madhavrao of Baroda were cooperating with him.
Dadasaheb Phalke joined King Ravi Varma’s press. They had to prepare photolithos transfer. Impressed by the success of the press and the demand for paintings, some Dada’s relatives requested him to start in his own press participation.
Phalke established his own ingestion and printing works. He went to Germany as the chief and prominent technician of printing in 1909. Got information about the operation of new machines. Returned with a new machine for three colors. The press went on. At the same time, there was differences with participation. They became sad.
Not minded to print
His wife Saraswati Devi has written about this- ‘His mind was not engaged in the work of printing. Proposals from many Gujarati families came that Lakshmi should not be disappointed at the missing art press. Press Saraswati press with new capital. That was my construction. I do not want to harm that press. ‘
Dada Phalke was restless overnight after watching the film ‘Life of Christ’ in 1911. On watching the film for the second, third and fourth time, there was a stir in his Manosonsar and the pictures of his film to be made in the mind started running in the mind. If a film will be made on the life of Lord Krishna, then how Krishna’s childhood, Radha and Gopis’ episode, Kalia Mardan, Kansa slaughter will appear on the screen. His imagination rode on the wind.
Thoughts came to make films in India too
Dadasaheb Phalke has written his memoirs in the Navyuga magazine (1917–18), in which before the construction of ‘Raja Harishchandra’ (1911-12) has depicted his mental condition-my condition remained for the next two months that I could not sit peacefully until I could watch all the movies in Bombay. I analyzed all those films and wondered whether such films can be made here too.
During his eye illness, he discovered the right way to perform art. He sowed a pea grain in a pot. He started taking pictures of his germination and developing daily. When the entire plant grew, his first film came as ‘growth of pea plant’. Seeing this film, his businessman friend Nadkarni lent him money at the market rate and advised him to buy equipment from London.
Kitchen made dark room
The first family members in this industry became their assistants. Saraswati Kaki handled the work of the film performance. The holes in the strip of this film had to be done by themselves. The work of piercing the half -inch strip in the darkness was not easy. A ray of lights could have spoiled the entire film. A hole could get stuck in a film or projector when a hole was wrong. After disposing of the kitchen work during the day, the same kitchen used to turn into a dark room at night.
India’s first film ‘Raja Harishchandra understood from his experiences that Dada Phalke understood that it would be foolish to choose Lord Krishna for the first film. There is so much expansion of Krishna’s life that he cannot be covered in two-and-a-half hours. The first small budget, less artist, a story that is simple and omniscient, but as soon as he decided to make a film, he was inspired by the play ‘Raja Harishchandra’, who was hit in Bombay and thus became India’s first film ‘Raja Harishchandra’.
Actor Dabke was selected for the role of the king in ‘Raja Harishchandra’. Male Anna Salunke agreed in the role of Taramati. The son Rohitashva dies due to snake bite, due to this superstition, no parents gave their son despite the greed of wealth. The grandfather was forced to take off his son Bhalchandra. Saraswati Kaki was not a little superstitious.
Hanuman flying in the air
The narratives of most of Dadasaheb Phalke’s films are mythological stories and characters. As a heritage of the family, he was studied in Purana, Upanishads, Ramayana and Mahabharata in childhood, which proved to be a very proud when he became a filmmaker. The painting of the characters of his early films is so strong and deeply seen that foreign audience considered Phalke’s expression.
Flying in the film ‘Lankadhan’, there was so much crowd of viewers to see Hanuman flying that many times he had to stay for two days and watch the film. At first, the cinema came as a miracle and a wonder and when Hanuman started flying in the air, there was a great miracle.
Dadasaheb Phalke gave many great films to the industry. These include Mohini Bhasmasura, Satyavan Savitri, Lanka Dahan, Shri Krishna’s birth. His last speaking film was Gangavataran. The biggest award of Indian films in his honor is ‘Dadasaheb Phalke’.
