Colombo: The Sri Lankan chief Tamil party appealed to the Disanayake government on Friday to take decisive steps to ‘bring out’ the truth ‘in the excavation of a possible mass grave site associated with the bloody struggle ended in 2009. Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) said in a letter to President Anura Kumar Disanayake, “We urge that quick and decisive action should be taken to highlight the truth, forensic procedures should suit international standards, and the culprits should be brought to the dock of justice.”
Skeletons found during redevelopment work
Earlier this year, skeleton remains were found during the redevelopment work at Chemmani at the Ariyalai crematorium in the Northern Jaffna Peninsula. Subsequently, the Jaffna Magistrate’s court officially declared it a collective grave and ordered an excavation under the supervision of the court. In 1998, Chamani was suspected to have a mass grave and 15 skeletons were found in the 1999 excavation.
‘Forensic investigation should be done with the help of experts’
ITAK said that Chammani and many other suspected mass graves in North and East are clear evidence of ‘war crimes and massacre operations against Tamil population’. The party claimed that more than 40 skeletons including infants have been found in the latest excavation. The party urged the President Disanayake to conduct forensic inquiry with the help of international experts on information related to the discovery of both excavations to ensure justice.
How many people died?
