According to the legendary fasting story of Devshayani Ekadashi, there was a Chakravarti king named Mandhata in Suryavansh, who was a truthful and great pride. He used to follow his subjects like a son. All his subjects were full of wealth and happiness. There was never a famine in his kingdom.
At one time there was no rain in the kingdom of that king for three years and there was a famine. The subjects became extremely sad due to lack of food. Yajnadi in the state also stopped due to lack of food. One day the people went to the king and said, O Rajan! All the subjects are calling Tri-Tarahi, because rain is the reason for the creation of the whole world. Lack of rain has caused famine and the subjects are dying. That’s why O Maharaj! Tell me some remedy that removes the suffering of the subjects.
King Mandhata started saying that you guys are right, food is produced by rain and you have become very sad due to not having rain. I understand the sorrows of you people. Saying this, the king took some army along and walked towards the forest. There the king visited the ashram of many sages and finally reached the ashram of Angira Rishi, son of Brahmaji. The sage blessed the king and asked him the reason for coming to the ashram after Kushalakshm. The king folded his hands and said with a devotion, O God! Even after following religion in every way, there has been a famine in my state. The subjects are very sad due to this. The people suffer from the influence of the king’s sins, it is said in the scriptures. When I rule according to religion, how did my state get famine? The reason for this could not be known yet. Now I have come to you to retire this doubt. Please remove this doubt of mine. Also, tell me any way to remove the suffering of the subjects.
Hearing this, the sage started saying that O Rajan! This golden age is good in all ages. It includes all the four stages of religion, that is, in this era, religion is the most progressed. People worship Brahma and only Brahmins have the right to read Vedas. Only Brahmins can have the right to do penance, but a Shudra is doing penance in your kingdom. Due to this defect, there is no rain in your state. Therefore, if you want the good of the subjects, then kill the Shudra.
On this, the king started saying that, how can I kill the Shudra who performs that innocent penance. Explain any other way to get rid of this defect. Then the sage started saying that O Rajan! If you want to know other remedies, then listen- fast on Ekadashi named Padma of Shukla Paksha of Ashada month. Due to the effect of fasting, there will be rain in your kingdom and people will get happiness because the fast of this Ekadashi is going to give all the siddhis and destroy all the disturbances. Fasting this Ekadashi with people, servants and ministers.
Hearing this promise of sage Muni, the king came back to his city and he fasted to Padma Ekadashi methodically. Due to the effect of that fast, there was rain and the subjects got pleasure. Therefore, all humans should observe the fast of Ekadashi of this month. This fast is going to give enjoyment in this world and liberation in the hereafter. All sins of human beings are destroyed by reading and listening to this story. And on this day, reading this mantra is prayed to Srihari. mantra- ‘Supta Tvayi Jagannath Jamatasuti Bhavedidam. Vibbade Tvayi Buddha Jatsarva Characharam. ‘ That is, O Lord, by awakening you, the whole creation is awakened and your sleep makes the whole world, variables and seals asleep. By your grace, this creation sleeps and wakes up, keep the grace on us with your compassion. This is a prayer.
