The prosecutor’s office said Payne’s injuries showed that he did not attempt to save himself from the fall, which could indicate that he was unconscious or in a disoriented state at the time.
Witnesses, including three hotel workers and two women who were in Payne’s room earlier that day, gave statements to prosecutors. Although the women left the scene before he fell, they described his behavior as erratic. Hotel staff had raised the alarm moments before Payne’s death, and called emergency 911 to report the musician’s disturbing behavior. The receptionist said Payne seemed drunk and was messing around in his room, leading to immediate police intervention.
Investigators are working to piece together the events leading up to Payne’s fatal fall and are examining the possible involvement of a third party. However, it is believed that Payne was alone in his room at the time of the accident.
