Cairo: A migrant boat overturned near the Libyan coast on Friday, killing at least 15 Egyptians. Libya officials have given information about the incident. According to Marwan al-Shaheeri, a media spokesperson of the general administration of Coast Guard in Tobrook, the boat was going to Europe and there were many people in it. The boat overturned near the Eastern Libyan city of Tobrook at around two o’clock in the night. Al-Shairi has confirmed that all the killed were Egyptian citizens.
The reason for the boat overturns is not known
Two Sudani members of the crew have been rescued but the third is still missing. He told the ‘Associated Press’ that the sea is not suitable for any sailing activity, but he could not tell why the boat overturned. It is not clear how many people are still missing. Local support group Abreen, who monitored migrant activities, said on Facebook on Friday afternoon that 10 people have survived in the incident.
An accident happened earlier also
According to Libyan officials, last month, a migrant boat carrying 32 people overturned near the Libyan coast in which one person died. 22 other people went missing in this accident. In Tobrook, the Coast Guard said that 9 people were rescued. The boat was going to Europe and there were migrants from Egypt and Syria.
Hundreds of people have died
The International Organization told AP that in the year 2025, 531 migrants have been reported and 754 missing migrants have been reported on the Central Mediterranea Sea Marg so far. The organization had earlier said that 962 migrants died and 1,563 went missing on the banks of Libya last year. Earlier in the year 2023, about 17,200 migrants were stopped and sent back to Libya.
