Sartaj Mohammad Rafi, the world of voice, who mesmerized the audience with his wonderful playback singer, got the inspiration to become a playback singer from a fakir. Born on 24 December 1924 in Kotla Sultan Singh village of Punjab, Rafi used to listen to the songs of a fakir, which created an unwavering attachment to music in his heart.
Rafi’s elder brother Hameed had recognized Mohammad Rafi’s growing trend towards music and inspired him to move forward on this path. In Lahore, Rafi started teaching music from Ustad Awadul Wahid Khan and also gave Indian classical music to Ghulam Ali Khan to learn Indian classical music. Once Hameed took Rafi to KL Sehgal at the concert, but due to lack of electricity, KL Sehgal refused to sing.
Hameed requested the operator of the program to give his brother Rafi a chance to sing. When the operator agreed, Rafi first introduced his first song to the audience at the age of 13 at the age of 13. The composer Shyam Sundar, sitting among the audience, liked his song and invited Rafi to come to Mumbai. In the music direction of Shyam Sundar, Rafi sang his first song for a Punjabi film Gul Baloch with Soniyini Hiriye Ni Parsholy singer Zeenat Begum. In the year 1944, under the music direction of Naushad, he sang his first Hindi song for Hindustan’s Hum Hai first AAP.

In the year 1949, he reached the heights of success through the song Suhani Raat Dahal, sung in the film Dulari under the music direction of Naushad and after that he did not look back. Rafi, who is called the voice of well -known heroes like Dilip Kumar Devanand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Rajkumar, sang more than 26000 songs for about 700 films in his entire cine career.
Rafi was a fan of Amitabh Bachchan
Mohammad Rafi was a great fan of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Mohammad Rafi was not fond of watching the film but sometimes he used to watch the film. Once Rafi saw Amitabh Bachchan’s film Wall. After seeing the wall, Rafi became Amitabh’s great fan. In the film Naseeb released in 1980, Rafi got the opportunity to sing the doubles song ‘Chal Chal Mere Bhai’ with Amitabh. Rafi was very happy after singing this song with Amitabh. Apart from Amitabh, Rafi also liked the films of Shammi Kapoor and Dharmendra. Mohammad Rafi was very fond of Amitabh-Dharmendra’s film Sholay and he saw it three times.
Mohammad Rafi was known due to soft nature in the film industry but once his Kokil was confused with Lata Mangeshkar. Mohammad Rafi sang hundreds of songs with Lata Mangeshkar but there was a time when Rafi stopped talking to Lata. Lata Mangeshkar was in favor of royalty on songs while Rafi never demanded royalty.
Rafi Saheb believed that once the producers gave the money for the song, then what should the royalty be sought. The controversy between the two increased so much that the conversation between Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar also stopped and the two refused to sing the song together, although after four years, the efforts of actress Nargis sang the song ‘Dil Pukar’ in a program together.
Apart from Hindi films, Mohammad Rafi also sang songs for Marathi and Telugu films. Mohammad Rafi was awarded the Filmfare Award 6 times in his career. In the year 1965, Rafi was also awarded the Padma Shri Award. On July 30, 1980, the song Sham Kayu is sad, after completing the song, when Rafi said to Laxmikant Pyare Lal, Shudi I Leave, which Laxmikant Pyare Lal was surprised to hear this because Rafi had never spoken to him before. The next day on 31 July 1980, Rafi suffered a heart attack and left the world.
