Monsoon havoc continues in Himachal Pradesh
The monsoon is wreaking havoc in Himachal Pradesh. Heavy rains, landslides and floods continue in the entire state. On Monday, a total of 309 roads, including National Highway 305, were blocked due to landslides and sudden floods. According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 236 water supply schemes and 113 distribution transformers ((DTRs) are also not working.
Deaths occurred due to rain -related reasons?
According to the report of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC), a total of 184 deaths have been recorded so far from June 20 to August 3, 2025. Of these, 103 deaths occurred directly due to rain -related reasons, such as landslides (17), sudden flood (8), cloud burst (17), drowning (20), electric shock (7) and other weather related incidents (34). 81 other people lost their lives in road accidents, most of which died on hilly areas and damaged roads.
- Mandi has emerged as the most affected district, where 23 deaths related to rain and 14 deaths have occurred. In addition, the maximum infrastructure has been damaged in Mandi itself, where 167 roads are closed and the most water supply (74 schemes) and power services (91 transformers) have been disrupted.
- Kangra district had 24 weather related deaths and six accident deaths, while Kullu recorded 10 monsoon -related deaths and eight road accidents. Chamba and Shimla have also caused many casualties and massive damage.
- In Lahaul-Spiti, a bridge collapsed on Darad Nala has broken contact between the Maidgran and Kurchhed, causing the local communities to be isolated.
- In Kullu, a large landslide near Zhed (Khanag) has closed National Highway 305, although a temporary route is currently available for light vehicles through Kandugad.
The most inaccessible village has increased difficulties
At the same time, continuous rains have increased the difficulties of the most inaccessible area of Kullu district. Recently, the only bridge to the most inaccessible village of “Marore” was swept away in floods. Now the villagers have to resort to two trees to cross the swollen drain. Two trees have been put on a swollen drain. Slipping toe from the tree means only death.
The SDMA has warned that there is a high risk of landslides, sudden floods and breakdown of services, with the expectation of rain in the coming days. Restoration and relief work continues across the state.
Mandi, Kullu and Chamba among the most affected districts
On Sunday, 296 roads were closed due to disaster, 134 power distribution was out of transformer service and 266 water supply schemes were disrupted, leading to the loss of widespread infrastructure caused by torrential rains in the hilly state. The most affected districts include Mandi, Kullu and Chamba, a large part of road barriers and public service breakdown. National Highway-505 at Lahaul-Spiti is also closed due to landslides and sudden floods.
The SDMA report states that the total loss to public property including roads, electricity lines, water systems, health infrastructure and schools is more than 1,71,495 lakhs, with more than 88,800 hectares of crops affected, mainly in agriculture and horticulture.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rain in many parts of the state in the next 12 hours. There is a possibility of light to moderate rains and heavy rains at several places in many places in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan and Una districts in the next 12 hours.
