Violence in Gopalganj, Bangladesh
More than 160 people were arrested on Friday in Gopalganj, the hometown of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The duration of curfew was also extended. Meanwhile, the death toll in the violence in the city on Wednesday has increased to five. According to the police, 164 people have been arrested. The search for hundreds of others continues.
Patrolling in young rivers and canals
The Navy and Coast Guard personnel are also patrolling rivers and canals to catch the suspects involved in the violence in Gopalganj, about 160 km south-west of Dhaka. Four people were killed in a clash during the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally.

According to the statement, “In the initial phase of violence, many policemen and journalists were injured, while government vehicles and public establishments were vandalized and set on fire.”
An atmosphere of fear among people
It said, “As soon as the situation deteriorated, both the army and the local police intervened and managed to bring the situation under control.” Meanwhile, the police said that the period of curfew imposed for 22 hours on Wednesday evening has been extended till 6 am on Saturday. On contacting over the phone, people said that in order to monitor the entire district, there is an atmosphere of fear among the army and riot police along with the paramilitary forces border guards Bangladesh (BGB) and the deployment of the Jawans being deployed.
