Sydney: Loneliness is a word that is often not associated with youth. We see our youth as busy with family, friends spent with friends and school and work activities. However, loneliness is an experience that we probably combine to most the elderly. A new report on loneliness among the youth of Australia found that 43 percent of people between the ages of 15 to 25 feel loneliness, or rather 2 out of every 5 youths are victims of loneliness. When asked, one in four people felt lonely, while one in seven people felt loneliness for at least two years.
Survey data analysis
The report has analyzed data of domestic, income and labor mobility survey in Australia of 2022-23. This helped to understand what kind of factors increase the risk of loneliness in the youth. It was found that due to poor physical and mental health, the possibility of frequent loneliness in youth may be doubled or even more. Socio-economic and behavioral factors also play a role for this.
This is a matter of worry
It is a matter of concern that the chances of suffering from mental stress in the youth who are constantly feeling lonely increase to seven times. Research suggests that it can also affect physical health. For example, a study published in 2024 found that loneliness is associated with early symptoms of vascular dysfunction (functional change in arteries) in adults up to the age of 22 years.
Why is loneliness?
Apart from analyzing the data, youths between the ages of 16 to 25 were also interviewed. These youths were asked what helps them to create healthy social relationships and what obstructs them. One of the things he emphasized was needed.
What to do?
Loneliness has long been considered a personal issue, but it is becoming clear that we have to change our attitude and include solutions. The Social Relations Commission of the World Health Organization has recently released a report, in which loneliness has been described as a public health, social, community and economic issue. The economic burden caused by loneliness in Australia is 2.7 billion Australian dollars per year, including the cost of health care, including hospital. (The Conversation)
