MS Dhoni registered ‘Captain Cool’ trademark, win in legal battle after 2 years
Ms dhoni captain cool trademark: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the most cool player of Indian cricket, has now become legally ‘Captain Cool’. He got this name for his calm nature as the captain of India and Chennai Super Kings. Now wicketkeeper -batsman Dhoni has acquired a trademark to make the word ‘Captain Cool’ to make his intellectual property (Intellectual Property – IP).
MS Dhoni had applied to take a trademark in the name ‘Captain Cool’ for sports coaching, training and its services. Now this name has been officially published in the trademark journal on 16 June 2025, which means it has got legal recognition.
Trademark found after 2 years long battle
MS Dhoni filed this trademark in the year 2023, but a third party objected to it. For the last two years, the Indian captain was fighting a legal battle in the matter. Now finally the court has ruled in his favor. This decision can mean that Dhoni can now start his own cricket academies. However, ‘Thala’ had previously signed a deal to open academies, but it was canceled in 2021.
Talking to India Today, MS Dhoni’s lawyer Mansi Aggarwal said, “The case highlights the legal aspects of the personality rights of the famous celebrities and the identity associated with their names. The identity of ‘Captain Cool’ is deeply associated with Dhoni, which has also been accepted by the court.”
How to get this trademark
However, this journey was not easy. This application of MS Dhoni was objected to under Section 11 (1) of the Trademark Act. Officials felt that the name could match another existing brand and this could cause confusion. But Dhoni’s legal team argued that the name ‘Captain Cool’ is identified only and only with Dhoni, which has been used by fans and media for years. This name has now become a part of Dhoni’s personality.
The court accepted these arguments and said that Dhoni is so strong with the name that it will not cause any kind of confusion. And thus Dhoni got full rights in the name ‘Captain Cool’.
