Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expanded the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government’s chief initiative ‘Mukhyamantri Breakfast Scheme’ in the urban areas of the state on Tuesday. Stalin, along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who attended the event as the chief guest, made a formal start to serve food to children in ‘St. Joseph Primary School’ here. Stalin and Maan also sat down with the children.

3.06 lakh additional children will get benefit

With this expansion, the fifth phase of the scheme has started, which will benefit 3.06 lakh additional children from 2,429 schools. After the expansion of the scheme, a total of 20.59 lakh children in the state will be benefited from the ‘Mukhyamantri Breakfast Scheme’.

What in the menu?

Government spokesperson P. Amudha had said on Monday that appropriate steps have been taken to prepare breakfast in a centralized kitchen in a clean manner. Additional Chief Secretary Amudha said, “Recipes like Pongal, Khichdi or Upma, and dal and sambar served together will be transported to the respective schools via van.”

Free breakfast scheme for students from first to 5th

The Chief Minister announced in the Assembly on 6 May 2022 that a free breakfast scheme would be launched for students from first grade to fifth. He started the first phase of the scheme on 15 September in Madurai. Stalin said on Sunday, “From the days of the Justice Party to the Dravidian Model Sarkar, we have been providing food to the children and provide them education. It is not just food, but a strong basis for the development of children.” (With language inputs)
