Symbolic picture
Mumbai: National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) said on Thursday that the first success in the 21-km long tunnel between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilfata in Thane for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has achieved first success. NHSRCL reported that the 2.7 km long tunnel has been successfully completed using the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM).
This achievement is an important jump in India’s first bullet train project, which aims to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad to a high-speed rail corridor, significantly reduce travel time and increase transport efficiency between the two financial centers.
21 km long tunnel being built
NHSRCL reported that the 21 km long tunnel will be an important part of the high-speed rail corridor, with 16 km tunnel using boring machines (TBM) and the remaining 5 kilometers will be built between Shilfata and Ghansoli via New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM). Significantly, the tunnel also has a 7 -km sea segment under Thane Creek.
To accelerate tunnel construction in the NATM part, an additional operated intermediate tunnel (ADIT) was constructed, making it possible to dig simultaneously from both the Ghansoli and Shilfata. Among the total NATM section, Shilfata has excavated about 1.62 km.
NHSRCL gave great information
NHSRCL stated that comprehensive security measures have been implemented at the site, which included installation of ground settlement markers, peasometers, inclinters, strength gauges and biometric access control systems. He further stated that they are designed to ensure safe and controlled tunnel construction work without affecting the surrounding infrastructure or houses.
