The Supreme Court has given a major verdict in the 2006 Mumbai train bomb blast case. The Supreme Court heard the Appeal of the Maharashtra government challenging the Bombay High Court order and has stayed the decision of the Bombay High Court to acquit all the 12 accused. The court has also issued notice to the accused on the appeal of the Maharashtra government filed against the acquittal of all the 12 accused.

No effect on the release of accused- Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has imposed an interim stay on the order of the Bombay High Court. However, the court has made it clear that this ban will not affect the release of the accused from jail. According to the information, the Maharashtra government has not demanded to send the accused released from jail back to jail.

What else did the court say?

The Supreme Court has issued notice to all the accused in this case. SG Tushar Mehta, presented by the Maharashtra government, said that all the accused in this case have been acquitted. We are not saying that you should send him back to jail, but this decision has made many such comments that can affect the trial in another case of MCOCA. After this, the Supreme Court stayed this part of the Bombay High Court order and said that the order of the Bombay High Court will not become Nazir in other cases.

On 11 July 2006, there were 7 blasts in the Mumbai local train within 11 minutes. 189 people were killed and around 827 people were injured in this terrorist attack. A total of 13 accused were arrested in this case and 15 accused were stated to be absconding. In 2015, the lower court convicted 12 people in the case of this blast, hanging 5 and 7 was sentenced to life imprisonment. Subsequently, under the legal process, the government filed a petition in the High Court for the confirmation of the hanging of 5 accused, the accused also filed a petition against the sentence. However, the Bombay High Court acquitted all the 12 accused on July 21. The High Court said- “The prosecution failed to prove that the case against the accused is beyond suspicion. The statements of almost all the prosecution witnesses were found incredible.”
