We find many stories about the Ganges in the Puranas. Let’s know some of them …
The origin of the Ganges- It is said that the name of Ganga Devi’s father is the Himalayas, who is also the father of Parvati. Just as Mata Sati, the daughter of King Daksha, was born in the name of Parvati in the Himalayas, in the same way, Mata Ganga took birth to Rishi Jahnu in her second birth.
It is also said that Ganga was born from the Kamandal of Brahma. This means that the birth of a river called Ganga. According to another legend, Brahmaji washed the feet of Vishnu with respect and collected that water in his kamandal. The Ganges appeared with the thumb of Lord Vishnu, so where does Vishnupadi go. According to another legend, the king of the Ganges mountains is the daughter of Himwan and his wife Meena, thus she is also the sister of Goddess Parvati. In some places he has been described as the family of Brahma.
1. Ganga Story: It is known by all that the Ganges river came to the earth from heaven only with the efforts of Ikshvaku Vanshi King Bhagiratha, the ancestor of Lord Rama. But he had to do penance to bring Ganga from heaven to earth. Pleased with his penance, Brahma said- ‘Rajan! Do you want the Ganges descend on earth? But have you asked Earth that she will be able to handle the weight and velocity of the Ganges? I think that the power to handle the velocity of the Ganges is only in Lord Shankar. Therefore, it would be appropriate that the grace of Lord Shiva should be obtained to handle the load and velocity of the Ganges.
Maharaja Bhagiratha did the same way. Pleased with his harsh penance, Brahmaji left the Ganges stream from his kamandal. Then Lord Shankar tied the Ganges stream in his jatas and tied the jatas. Later, after worshiping Bhagiratha, he freed Ganga from his jatas.
It is said that Mahadev accepted him as his wife by the touch done by Brahmacharini Ganga. The wife serves a man, so her abode is in the heart of the husband or in the feet, but Bhagwati Ganga is on the forehead of Shiva. The Ganges appeared with the thumb of Lord Vishnu, so where does Vishnupadi go. Shiva accepted Goddess Ganga as the wife of Lord Vishnu.
It is said that Shankar and Parvati’s son Karthikeya’s womb was also worn by Goddess Ganga. Ganga’s father is also a snow, so she is considered to be Parvati’s sister. According to Skanda Purana, Goddess Ganga is the stepmother of Kartikeya (Murugan); Karthikeya is actually a son of Shankar and Parvati. Parvati created the image of Ganesha with her physical combination, but Ganesha came alive after the Ganges drowned in the holy water. Therefore, it is said that Ganesha has two mothers-Parvati and Ganga and hence they are also called Dwimatri and Gangeya (son of Ganga).
According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana (2.6.13-95), Vishnu has three wives who were not formed among themselves, so they only kept Lakshmi with him and sent Ganga to Shiva and Saraswati to Brahmaji.
2. The story of the Ganges: In the previous birth, King Pritapa was Mahabhish. He was present in the service of Brahmaji. At that time Ganga was also present there. King Mahabhis, fascinated on the Ganges, started looking at him. Ganga also fascinated them and started looking at them. Brahma saw all this and then cursed him to suffer sorrow in the human vagina.
King Mahabhish was born as Kuru King Pratap and before that Ganga as the daughter of Rishi Jahnu. One day Maharaja Pritap was doing penance on the banks of the Ganges with the wish of a son. Fascinated by her tenacity, form and beauty, Ganga came and sat on her right thigh and started saying, ‘Rajan! I want to marry you. I am the daughter of Jahnu Rishi, Ganga. ‘
On this, King Pritap said, ‘Gange! You are sitting on my right thigh, while the wife should be Vamangi, the right thigh is a symbol of the son, so I can accept you as my daughter -in -law. ‘ Hearing this, Ganga left from there.
When Maharaj Pritap received a son, he named him Shantanu and Ganga was married to this Shantanu. He got 8 sons from Ganga, out of which 7 were shed in the Ganges river and the 8th son was brought up. His 8th son was named Devavrata. This Devavrata later called Bhishma.
