Hague (Netherlands): US President Donald Trump met Ukraine President Vladimir Zelanski during the NATO summit on Wednesday. During this time, the two leaders had important talks about the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump said that the increase in defense spending by the Trans-Alantic alliance can play an important role in curbing Russia’s aggressive policies in the future.
NATO country made a big announcement
At this summit, NATO member countries have agreed to increase their defense spending by 2035 to 5 percent of the GDP (GDP) in view of the Russia-Ukraine War. This decision has been taken at a time when the war with Russia in Ukraine has entered the third year.
Trump said- will solve this war soon
Trump said at a press conference held at the conclusion of the summit, “If Europe takes more responsibility for its safety, it will help not only to protect the struggle with any neighboring country in the future. Trump also reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is keen to end the war in Ukraine. The war began in February 2022 with a Moscow invasion of Kiev.
Trump-Jalensky’s second meeting after a clash at White House
This was the second direct meeting between Trump and Zelanski after a sharp innovation at the White House earlier this year. Earlier in April, in the funeral of Pope Francis, there was a brief meeting between the two leaders in St. Peter Basilica. Zelansky described the meeting as “meaningful” and thanked Trump for the support of American in a post on social media. He wrote, “We discussed the path of ceasefire and real peace. We also talked about how to ensure the safety of our citizens.”
Trump guarantees NATO
Meanwhile, Trump also confirmed his support for NATO’s mutual defense guarantee (Article 5) on Wednesday. A day earlier, he raised doubts about this commitment, causing a wave of concern in a 32 -member alliance. But within about 24 hours, he clarified his stance and said, “I stand with the guarantee of collective security of NATO.”
Differences on Ukraine’s NATO membership
The meeting between Trump and Jailonski took place at a time when Ukraine needs new military aid for the war against Russia and there are differences over Ukraine’s membership within NATO. Nevertheless, the indication is clear that the US -led coalition is taking concrete steps towards maintaining strategic unity against Russia. (AP)
