Kathmandu: Nepali President’s advisor Sunil Bahadur Thapa has warned that terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (Let) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) pose a serious threat to India. Thapa said that Pakistani terrorists can use Nepal’s routes to attack India. He made this comment on 9 July during a high-level seminar organized by the Nepal International Cooperation and Participation Institute (NIICE) in Kathmandu. The program focused on dealing with the dangers of terrorism in South Asia. The seminar was attended by key regional experts and policy makers.
‘Terrorist attacks also affect Nepal’
Apart from Sunil Bahadur Thapa at the seminar, other speakers involved in the seminar said that the terrorist attacks in India also have an impact on Nepal, causing damage to regional peace and stability. The speakers described the support being given by Pakistan to terrorism as a major obstacle in SAARC’s effectiveness and widespread regional integration. The seminar urged to strengthen anti-terrorism cooperation, including strict action against money laundering, sharing intelligence information and joint patrolling along the border with India. It also called for the regional powers to avoid adopting double standards in dealing with terrorism.
India launched Operation Sindoor
After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India launched Operation Sindoor and demolished 9 terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). The people involved in the seminar described India’s move as a strong and effective response to the dangers across the border. The seminar stated that Nepal still remains insecure due to IC-814 kidnapping and incidents such as Pahalgam attack by Lashkar-e-Taiba. 26 civilians including a Nepali citizen were killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Concluding the discussion, the people involved in this talked about combating terrorism, as well as emphasis on the immediate need for a dedicated regional system.
Terrorists have been arrested from Bords
There is a 1,751 km -long open border between India and Nepal, on which a minimum security check is done. It may be easy for terrorists to infiltrate India with this border. Over the years, several terrorists from Pakistan-based organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed have been arrested trying to enter India via Nepal.
