No compromise with the interests of farmers and farmers: Modi
PM Narendra Modi on Thursday said without mentioning the American tariff that the interest of our farmers is the highest priority for us. India will never compromise with the interests of its farmers, cattle rearers and fishermen siblings.
PM Modi said at the MS Swaminathan Shatabdi International Conference in Delhi on Thursday, “I know that I will have to pay a huge price personally, but I am ready for it.”
PM Modi’s statement came a day after the announcement of 50% tariff on India in India. Actually America wants entry into India’s agriculture and dairy sector with its terms. India is not ready on it after a meeting of several tours.
The goods sent from India to America will be charged today, ie 25% tariff from August 7. At the same time, 25% extra tariff will be applicable from August 27. This will make Indian goods expensive in the US market. Their demand may decrease. The importers there can ask for goods from other countries.
Differences on Agriculture and Dairy Sector, 5 Points
The US wants its dairy products (such as milk, cheese, ghee etc.) to be allowed to import into India. American companies claim that their milk is clean and quality and may be cheaper in the Indian market.
India is the largest milk producing country in the world and crores of small farmers are engaged in this sector. The Indian government is afraid that if American dairy products come to India, they can cause huge damage to local farmers.
Most people in India want pure vegetarian milk products, while some dairy products in the US use animal bones (eg ranet). India’s condition is that it should be vegetarian.
Along with this, the US wants wheat, rice, soybean, maize and fruits like apples, grapes etc. to be sold on low tax in the Indian market. He wants India to reduce its import duty.
In addition, the US has also tried to sell the biotechnology (GMO) crops in India, but the government and farmers organizations of India strongly oppose it.
