Currently, the Middle East geo-politics remains complicated and unstable. The Shia regime under the leadership of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran is engaged in increasing the regional influence, while his tension with Israel is at its peak. America has always been interested in this region and oil, Israel and terrorism have been the main reasons behind it. Currently, US President Donald Trump has a crooked eye on Iran’s highest leader Ayatollah Khamenei. He clearly said in a statement, ‘We are well aware of where the so -called supreme leaders are hidden. He is an easy target, but there are safe there, we are not going to kill him right now, at least not at the moment. ‘ In such a situation, the first decade of this century is remembered when Iraq was attacked under the leadership of America and the era of Saddam Hussain came to an end.

When America attacked Iraq

The US announced a war against global terrorism after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. The then US President George W. Bush targeted Iraq, describing Iraq as a producer of ‘supporters of terrorism’ and ‘destructive weapons’. However, it was later proved that Iraq did not have WMD. Nevertheless, on 20 March 2003, the US and its associates attacked Iraq under ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom’. The immediate goal of this attack was to overthrow Saddam Hussein’s rule, and very soon the US also succeeded in its cause.

How did Saddam Hussein end?

Saddam Hussain, who was the President of Iraq since 1979, set an example of barbarity and dictatorship during his reign. Their cruelty against Kurds and Shia communities, the 1980–88 Iran-Eraq War and the attack on Kuwait in 1990 were part of his policies. The US attack in 2003 demolished his rule rapidly. After capturing Baghdad, Saddam Hussain went underground in April 2003. In December 2003, the US Army arrested him from a secret hideout near Tikrit. His pictures, in which he appeared in a beard and disturbed condition, made headlines worldwide.

Saddam Hussain, the former dictator of Iraq, was seen as something like this.

Saddam Hussain’s bad days started after being caught. He was prosecuted under the aegis of Iraq’s interim government and US officials. He faced serious allegations like crime, war crime and genocide against humanity, especially in 1982 for the Dazail massacre, in which 148 Shia citizens were killed. In November 2006, he was sentenced to death by the Iraqi court, and he was hanged on 30 December 2006. In this way, Saddam Hussein, who was counted among the most powerful leaders of the Middle East once, came to an end.

Saddam’s family also came bad days

The end of some members of Saddam’s family was as sad as his head. His two sons, Uday Hussain and Kusay Hussain, were killed in an encounter with the US Army in Mosul in July 2003. Kusay’s minor son was also killed in this attack. Saddam’s two sons were considered cruel and hungry for power like their father. Uday was accused of rape and murder, while Kusay was considered a cruel commander of the Iraqi army and intelligence service. After the death of Saddam and his sons and many other relatives, the remaining markings of his rule also ended.

Saddam’s wife, Sajida Talfah, and his close relatives had to leave Iraq and flee. Sajida took refuge in Jordan, where she started living in oblivion with some of her family members. His daughter Ragad Hussain also raised a cloud of crisis. Ragad, who was the eldest daughter of her father, was included in the ‘Most Wanted’ list of 59 people by Iraq’s interim government. Ragad also took refuge in Jordan and tried to defend his father from there, but his efforts failed. Her second daughter, Rana Hussain, and younger daughter Hala Hussain also stayed in Jordan and stayed away from public life.

What happened in Iraq after the end of Saddam era?

The end of Saddam’s rule and the collapse of his family created a power zero in Iraq. The US claimed to have established democracy, but instead increased communal violence and instability in Iraq. Tension between Shia and Sunni communities, the rise of terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, and later the emergence of the Islamic State (ISIS) were direct consequences. The US action proved to be a turning point in regional geopolitics, which gave Iran a chance to strengthen its position in the region.

Today, when we see the Iran-Israel tension and the role of America, the story of Saddam’s collapse is like a warning. America’s intervention destabilized Iraq, resulting in the strength balance in the region. Under the leadership of Khamenei, Iran increased its influence in Iraq through Shia Militia, which became a new challenge for Israel and the US. Today this challenge has become so big that the entire Middle East stands at the mouth of a fierce war.
