There is a lot of problem due to stray dogs in many areas.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard a petition filed in Noida to feed stray dogs. The petition claimed that the petitioner was being harassed for feeding the dogs. On this, the Supreme Court questioned the petitioner, ‘Why don’t you feed these dogs in your house?’ Let us know that stray dogs have taken the form of a big problem in many areas of the country and there are reports of attacks on people.

‘Feed these dogs in your house’

A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta told the petitioner’s counsel, “Should we leave every street and road open to these big hearted people?” Is there all space for animals and no place for humans? Feed these dogs in your house, no one is stopping you. ‘ The court said that the petitioners should open a shelter in their house and feed all the stray dogs there.

What did the petitioner say on this issue?

The petitioner’s counsel said that they are following Rule 20 of Animal Birth Control Rules 2023, which says that local resident welfare committees or apartment owner committees should arrange to feed stray animals in their area. The lawyer said that the Municipal Corporation is building such a place in Greater Noida, but this is not happening in Noida. He suggested that there should be a system of feeding in such places where people come and go.

‘People walking in the morning are also in danger’

On the argument of the lawyer, the bench said, ‘Do you ride a bicycle in the morning? Try once, then you will know. ‘ When the lawyer said that they walk in the morning and see many dogs, the court replied, ‘People walking in the morning are also in danger. Those who drive bicycles and two -wheelers are even more in danger. The court associated the petition with another similar case and postponed the hearing.

The petitioner also went to the High Court regarding the case

Explain that earlier in March 2025, the Allahabad High Court had heard the petition of the petitioner. The petitioner had demanded that stray dogs be protected by following the Animal Birth Control Rules and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. The High Court had said that the safety of stray dogs is necessary, but the safety of the common people will also have to be taken care of, so that their movement on the roads does not affect their movement.

‘Ensure safety of dogs as well as people’

The High Court also said that many incidents of stray dog attacks have come to light in recent times, in which people lost their lives and there was serious inconvenience to pedestrians. The court directed the officials to take the concerns of the petitioner and the common people seriously and take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of stray dogs as well as the safety of the people.
