Painful accident near the beach in Yemen, 68 migrants died due to boat overturning

Yemen Boat Capsizes
Cairo: A painful accident occurred near the beach in Yemen. On Sunday, at least 68 migrants from Africa died after a boat overturned in the sea. The United Nations Migration Agency reported that 74 others are missing in the incident. Abdoustar Asov, head of the International Migration Organization in Yemen, told Associated Press that the boat carrying 154 migrants from Ethiopia overturned in the offshore area of Abyan province of Yemen.
‘Missing people were considered dead’
Abdoustar Asov said that 12 migrants survived the accident. The bodies of 54 migrants came on the shore in Khanfar district. 14 others were found dead at a separate place. Asov said only 12 migrants have survived in the boat accident and the rest are missing. The missing people have been considered dead.
Smugglers take migrants across the Gulf of Aden
Significantly, despite the ongoing civil war for more than a decade, Yemen is a major route for migrants arriving from East Africa and Horn of Africa to work in Gulf Arab countries. Smugglers often take migrants across the Red Sea or Aden’s Gulf on dangerous, crowded boats. This incident in Yemen shows the seriousness of the migrant crisis.
Yemen coasts have already been accidents
According to the International Organization for Migration, hundreds of migrants have been killed or disappeared due to sinking of ships on the banks of Yemen in recent months, including the death of two migrants due to the overturning of four boats on the banks of Yemen and Djibouti in March and the disappearance of 186 others. According to an IOM’s March report, more than 60,000 migrants reached Yemen in 2024, less than 97,200 in 2023. This is due to excess patrolling in the water sector.
