The water crisis in Pakistan has deepened.

The strategy of ‘water strike’ India has adopted after the Pahalgam terror attack, there has been an outcry for water in Pakistan. After this move of India, there has been a huge decline in the flow of water from Pakistan’s dam in the Indus basin. The water level of reservoirs across the country has reached a dangerously low level. The main dams like Mangla and Turbella are dried, which is affecting irrigation and the threat of sowing of kharif crops is hovering.

Drought in Punjab

In fact, after reducing the water flow from India in the Chenab River, the lack of water in the Indus river system of Pakistan is increasing rapidly than last year. The condition is that water storage in Mangla and Turbala dams has reduced by half. According to recent data, the Indus River is at 1,465 meters on the Tarabella dam in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The water level on the Chashma Dam in Punjab on Indus is also 644 meters. At the same time, the Mangla dam on the Jhelum river in Mirpur is 1,163 meters. The condition in Marala of Sialkot, Punjab is very serious. The average flow of the Chenab River here was reduced from 26,645 cusecs of May 28 to 3.064 cusecs on 5 June.

Heavy water shortage for irrigation

There has been a wave of concern among the farmers due to lack of water from river canals for kharif crops. From the Indus-Jhelum to the Chenab river, the flow of water is very low. Due to fierce heat and lack of water, there have been wide cracks in the fields. The problem of irrigation has increased due to late monsoon arrival in Pakistan amidst the scorching temperature in this summer. The monsoon is less likely to arrive by the end of June, causing farmers to face heavy water shortage for irrigation.

Why did India stop water?

After the Pahalgam attack on 22 April, India announced on 23 April that it would no longer bring the Indus Water Treaty into practice. The central government clearly says, “Blood and water cannot flow together.” That is, when terrorists are shedding blood in India since the land of Pakistan, then watering Pakistan is against the national interests.
