Pakistan is threatening to cancel the Shimla Agreement in response to the ban on India’s Indus Water Agreement.

Shimla agreement: After the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, India has taken tough steps against Pakistan. India has stopped the Indus Water Agreement with Pakistan for the first time. Along with this, India has imposed several more restrictions on Pakistan. In response, Pakistan has asked Indians to leave the country in 48 hours, while the Shimla is threatening to end the agreement. In such a situation, let us know, what is the Shimla agreement?

The agreement was reached after the Indo-Pak war of 1971, in which Pakistan received a crushing defeat and came into existence as an independent nation East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). During this war, India had made around 93,000 Pakistani soldiers a warfare. Pakistan President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto came to Shimla to talk about this.

The Shimla Agreement is a bilateral agreement between India and Pakistan. On 2 July 1972, the documents related to the agreement were signed by the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi and Pakistan President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in Shimla city of Himachal Pradesh, India, hence it is called the Shimla Agreement.

What is in the Shimla Agreement?

Talk of solving differences peacefully: India and Pakistan will solve their differences peacefully. The two countries will resolve any dispute through bilateral talks, not through force or war.

Talk of maintaining lines in the status quo: The Line of Control (LOC) after the war was recognized by both sides and an agreement was reached on no unilateral action.

Release of prisoners: India accepted the release of the arrested Pakistani soldiers on the basis of humanity.

Kashmir issue will be bilateral: Under this agreement, it was decided that all issues including Kashmir between India and Pakistan will be resolved only by mutual negotiations and not with international arbitration.

If the agreement is over, what can Pakistan do?

If the Shimla Agreement (1972) between India and Pakistan ends, Pakistan will raise the issue of Kashmir loudly in front of the United Nations or other countries. The situation and peace of the ceasefire on the LoC can be disturbed. In such a situation, the Indian Army will have to be more vigilant.
