Param Sundari Review: Siddharth-Jahnavi’s chemistry and beautiful location could not save weak story
There is a new problem in Bollywood these days, lack of creativity. Film makers either resort to remakes or create a new package by adding glimpses of old hit films. ‘Param Sundari’ is a recent example of this. While watching this film, you will be reminiscent of many films like Dilwale Dulhania, Chennai Express and Two States. It is a matter of regret that despite taking inspiration from these hit films, the makers failed to make a kind of film.
The biggest problem of ‘Param Sundari’ is its weak writing. There was a lot of scope for emotion, romance, drama and comedy in the story, but such scenes were not written in the script which could bring laughter, wake up heart touching romance or make their eyes moist in emotional scenes. As a result, the film proves to be a flat journey, which does not have the strength to bind the audience.
The film begins with Param (Siddharth Malhotra), who is a tech-servant youth from Delhi. He is thinking of investing in a dating app that suggests who your perfect solmet is. The app puts his own profile to try the app and the app tells him that his Solmet is Sundari (Jahnavi Kapoor) living in a small village in Kerala.
After this, he goes to meet the supreme directly to meet the beauty, who hire the tourist as homestay. The nature of both is completely different, but over time the Param gets attached to the beauty. The twist comes when Param knows that Sundari’s marriage is fixed to Venu. The story ahead shows whether the ultimate beauty wins the heart or not, although it is not difficult to guess.
Param is shown a person who rely on technology more than emotions. His purpose of meeting Sundari makes sense, but to believe that Sundari is his solution, the film does not provide enough evidence. The audience just has to rely on that Param liked the beauty. On the other hand, Sundari’s inclination towards Param also seems to be without reason. There are not only scenes that can convince both the audience and the beauty that the ultimate is his true partner, for which he leaves Venu. This is the reason why the romance of the film seems forced and artificial.
The first half of the film is kept in a light-hearted manner, but it also does not have strong scenes for entertainment. Just before the interval, it is revealed that Sundari’s marriage has been fixed, which could have been a good twist, but the second half fades completely. Instead of being rich in drama and emotion, this part seems absolutely empty and boring. Even after watching the whole film, it is not understood why Sundari liked the ultimate.
The screenplay is extremely weak. Many scenes have been longer without reason. For example, the church scene in which the ultimate and beauty make long interactions, it is not only boring but also does not help in furthering the story. The sub-plot with deception associated with the dating app is not able to make any special contribution to the film. The writing team (Gaurav Mishra, Arsh Arora and Tushar Jalota) have worked below expected.
Director Tushar Jalota tried his best to give a feel-gud touch to the film. They had a good looking pair, the beautiful Kerala’s location and the sweet music was with them. Despite this, the weak script faded these features. As a result, the film is unable to fly in the sky of entertainment.
Siddharth Malhotra looked attractive and his acting was fine. Jahnavi Kapoor showed improvement in her role and she felt fit as a Malayali girl. The chemistry of both of them looked good on the screen, but due to lack of strength of the story, its effect went in vain.
Talking about music, Sachin-Jigar has given excellent tunes, on which Amitabh Bhattacharya has written well. The background music is also impressive and makes some glimpses of the film a little known.
Santhana Krishnan Ravichandran’s cinematography is wonderful and relaxes the eyes. Editing is sharp and Manish Pradhan has controlled the length of the film.
‘Param Sundari’ falls under the category of films that remain average despite great possibilities. If the story, writing and depth of characters were noted, then this film could have become a great love story. Despite being a beautiful location, sweet music and attractive starcast, the film fails to tie the audience. In the end, it will be to say that the experience of watching ‘Param Sundari’ is the same as after opening a beautiful package, there is nothing special in it.
