This time Shwetambar Jain community will celebrate its Paryushan festival from August 20 and Digambar Jain Samajjan from August 28.
Religious importance of Paryushan: Paryushan literally means ‘living near purity’. The main objective of this festival is to renounce worldly pleasures and purify your soul. In Jainism, Paryushan is considered to be the biggest opportunity for spiritual development. In these eight days, followers of Jainism perform hard fast, fasting, Swadhyaya (study of scriptures), meditation and chanting.
During Paryushan, special attention is paid to the five basic principles of Jainism:
• Non -violence: Do not harm any living creature physically or mentally.
• Truth : Always tell the truth.
• Achurya (Astay): Do not steal
• celibacy: To follow self-control and restraint.
• Aparigraha: To renounce attachment to worldly things.
The main work and last day of the festival: In the eight days of Paryushan, Jain Muni and Sadhvi give religious teachings to devotees and recite the Holy Jain Granth Kalp Sutra, which describes the life and teachings of Lord Mahavira.
The last day of the festival is called Samvatsari, which is the most important day of this festival. On this day, all people call each other ‘Michmi Dukkadam’. This means, ‘If I have ever hurt you in unknowingly, then I apologize to you.’ This is a festival of forgiveness and reconciliation, where everyone ends the Ver-Bhava raised in their mind.
