Champions cup: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is once again under question about its decisions. The ‘Champions Cup’ tournament started with great expectations and huge publicity has now been closed after just one season.

This domestic tournament was started in 2024, which aims to make domestic cricket more competitive and professional in Pakistan. But this tournament has been completely removed in the schedule of 2025-26.

Mentors became five veterans

When the Champions Cup was announced, PCB made big claims about it. The board appointed five former veteran players Sakalain Mushtaq, Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik and Sarfaraz Ahmed as mentors of different teams for this tournament.

In Mentor was appointed under a three -year contract, in which it was a matter of giving him 50 lakh Pakistani rupees (about 1.5 crore Indian rupees annually) every month. PCB described it as “competitive and transparent selection process”.

Resignation one after the other, the board hit the break

However, there was not much time that questions started to arise on the direction of the tournament. First Shoaib Malik himself opted out of this project. After his departure, the round of inner meetings began, and finally the board decided to completely finish the entire mentorship model after internal review.

According to sources, PCB reviewed the impact and relevance of the Champions Cup and the Mentor program, after which the result was that the plan could not fulfill its objectives and would be the right choice to stop it.

New domestic schedule of 2025–26 declared

PCB has released a new calendar of the 2025–26 domestic season. In this, the PCB has again placed the old structure at the center. The Quad-e-Azam Trophy, which is considered the major first class competition of Pakistan, will now be played with 8 teams in the new format. It will begin on 22 September.
