Rajendra Chola first
Rajendra Chola I (1014–1044 AD) was one of the most powerful and visionary rulers in Indian history. Under his leadership, the Chola Empire increased its influence in South and Southeast Asia. He established Gangaacond Cholpuram as a royal capital after his victorious campaigns and the temple built by him was a symbol of Shaiva devotion, monumental architecture and administrative skills for more than 250 years.
Today, this temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for its complex sculptures, Chola bronze statues and ancient inscriptions. The Adi Tiruvatirai festival also celebrates the rich Tamil Shaiva Bhakti tradition, which was enthusiastically supported by the Cholas and immortalized by the saints of 63 Nayanmars – Tamil Shaivism. It is noteworthy that Rajendra Chola’s birth Nakshatra, Thiruvathirai (Ardra), starting from 23 July, has made this year’s celebration even more important.
