Police convoy attacked in Iran, ten officers killed

Tehran, 26 October (HIST). There was a major attack on an Iranian police convoy on Saturday in Iran’s restive Balochistan and southern province of Sistan. 10 police officers died in this attack. The attack took place in Gohar Kuh, which is located about 1,200 kilometers south-east of the capital Tehran.

Iran’s Baloch-backed organization Halwash said in a brief statement that 10 police officers were killed in the city of Taftan in an attack on two military vehicles. According to the statement, two military vehicles of the city headquarters police forces were attacked at the entrance of Gauhar Kuh city in the afternoon and all passengers of both vehicles lost their lives.

Halvash also posted a video on the social media platform Instagram along with photos of a damaged truck painted with the green stripe used by Iranian police. In this, the bodies of two police officers are visible on the seat of a truck.

According to the government news agency, Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni has ordered an investigation into the attack on the police convoy. He has admitted that many police personnel have been martyred in the attack.

Violence by Baloch insurgents has continued for more than two decades in the Baloch areas of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Sistan and Baluchistan region of Iran has become a center of violence linked to heroin smugglers. In early October, an incident of killing of Afghan migrants by Iranian security forces took place in Baluch area. After this his relations with the Taliban worsened further. Halwash said that the attackers targeted two security forces vehicles and everyone in them was killed.
