Police file FIR against e-commerce platforms selling Bishnoi, Dawood-themed t-shirts | Crime News
Maharashtra Cyber Cell filed an FIR against e-commerce sites selling T-shirts with images of criminals like Lawrence Bishnoi and Dawood Ibrahim. Police say such products can negatively influence youth by glamorising crime.
Lawrence Bishnoi and Dawood Ibrahim
Mumbai: Maharashtra Police’s Cyber Cell has taken firm action against e-commerce platforms and sellers involved in selling T-shirts that depict and seemingly glorify notorious gangsters like Lawrence Bishnoi and Dawood Ibrahim.
According to officials, a FIR was registered against several online marketplaces after it was found that such merchandise was being sold on their sites.
What Cyber Cell officials said
Police said that the Cyber Cell, which is the central agency responsible for cybersecurity and crime prevention in Maharashtra, began an investigation following reports of T-shirts with images and slogans related to criminals being available on online platforms. The investigation revealed that popular platforms like Flipkart, AliExpress, TeeShopper and Etsy were among those selling this type of merchandise.
An official said, “In our ongoing monitoring, we found that T-shirts featuring gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Dawood Ibrahim were being sold on multiple platforms. These individuals are known for serious crimes, including organised crime, extortion, and terrorism.”
FIR registered
The police expressed significant concern over the potential influence such products could have on young people, who may see these figures as role models. According to the officials, by glamorising criminals through casual clothing, these products could send a dangerous message and lead to a normalisation of criminal activities.
The Cyber Cell registered an FIR under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections 192, 196, and 353. These sections address issues such as the misuse of information and spreading false evidence. Additionally, section 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000, which deals with the distribution of offensive online material, was included.
