Full story of Pramod Mahajan murder case
On April 22, 2006, around 7.30 am, Pramod Mahajan was sitting in the drawing room of his Purna Godavari Apartment house in Worli (Mumbai). There was some news channel on TV, its sound was coming. Tea was kept on the table in front and the moneylender had that day’s newspaper in his hands. There is a knock at the door. Rekha, Pramod’s wife, comes out of the bedroom and opens the door. His brother-in-law – Pramod’s younger brother – Praveen Mahajan was standing in front, wearing jeans and T-shirt.
There was nothing special between the two brothers, but if the younger brother came to the door, how could the elder brother close the door. Rekha opened the gate and Praveen came inside. Pramod was still busy reading the newspaper leisurely. Praveen sat on the sofa in front of them and Rekha went to the kitchen to make tea. When Pramod saw Praveen, he asked why he had come here?
Just a day before, Praveen had sent a message to Pramod – Now there will be no pleading, no prayer, now there will be a war, life or death. The next morning he was sitting in front of him and making a number of complaints. According to media reports of that time, Praveen cried sadly that his elder brother never helped him. When Praveen did not keep quiet, Pramod said that if he had any complaint then he should take an appointment. After this, the sound of bullets echoed in the flat.
‘Praveen, what have you done?
Rekha came running into the drawing room. Praveen had a pistol in his hands and Pramod Mahajan was lying soaked in blood on the sofa in front. Rekha screamed – Praveen, what have you done! When they pushed Praveen, he left from there. Rekha ran towards the 12th floor of the apartment crying. His brother and BJP leader Gopinath Munde lived there. When both of them came back immediately, they found that Pramod was conscious but his condition was deteriorating. By then the crowd had started gathering after hearing the noise.
Pramod Mahajan was taken to Hinduja Hospital in his son-in-law’s car. The news had spread throughout the country. Mahajan was a trouble-shooting leader of BJP, hence VIPs started reaching the hospital. On the other hand, after shooting his brother, Praveen reached Worli police station and surrendered. Pramod was treated for the next 13 days, many efforts were made to save him but he died on 3 May 2006.
A case was filed against Praveen for the murder of Pramod. In 2007, Praveen was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his brother. While serving his sentence, Praveen Mahajan died of a brain hemorrhage in 2010.
