The Puri police on Monday arrested 12 people on charges of recovering from devotees by becoming servants of Shri Jagannath Temple. The accused are between 20 and 51 years old. The accused were caught cheating devotees in the costumes of the servants from Baradanda (Grand Road) and Parikrama Marg.
Fake servants cheated the people of these states
Police said the gang was active for several months and mainly targeted pilgrims from West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Puri police said that they have arrested 12 people on the Bada Danda and Parikrama Marg for recovering from the devotees.
14 mobile phones and cash also seized
Police have seized 14 mobile phones and Rs 20,000 cash from these fake servants. The police came into action after a complaint by devotees harassing a section of servants.
Fake servant identified
The accused were identified by Pradeep Kumar Behera (24), Balram Badpanda (22), Mahima Prasad Baral (27), Manoranjan Sahu (32), Jagannath Das (36), Arjun Prasthi (33), Jagannath Mishra (27), Maheshwar Das (34), Santosh Raut (20), Sonu Das (23), Pradeep Kumar Tripathi (23), who Are. Police said that a case has been registered against the accused under several sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS). (With language input)
