Supreme Court directive on Hate Speech case
The Supreme Court has given strict instructions to the Central and State Governments on the Hate Speech. The court has said that speeches that spread hatred should be taken seriously and immediate action should be taken to curb it. The court also said that without waiting for the complaint to be filed, the police should take automatic cognizance and file an FIR and take action against the culprits. The court said that the speeches that spread hatred will not be tolerated and it is becoming a “big threat” which will have to be prevented from growing.

The Supreme Court has said that the hawker speeches spreading on social media are worrisome and there is a dire need to curb them. These days, attempts are being made to justify everything in the name of ‘freedom of expression’, which is very dangerous. The court said that speeches that spread hatred threatens the secular fabric of the country and should be immediately stopped.
Court also reprimanded the media
The Supreme Court has directed all the states and union territories to take automatic cognizance under Section 153A, 153B, 295A and 505 of the IPC, even if no complaint is filed. The court also said that any hesitation in taking action will be considered as contempt of the Supreme Court. The court has also reprimanded the media, especially TV channels and said that it is the responsibility of the anchors to stop the speeches that spread hatred. The court said that the government should not consider the issue of HAT speech as trivial and develop a mechanism to stop it.
