Railway income increased by 25.51% to Rs 2.39 lakh crore in FY23, CAG report revealed
Parliament On Tuesday, the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) related to the income of Indian Railways was presented. The CAG report said that Indian Railways earned a total of Rs 2,39,982.56 crore from passenger and goods transport in FY 2022-23, which is 25.51 percent more than the financial year 2021-22.
11.34 percent increase recorded in the expenditure of Railway Ministry
According to the CAG report, the total expenditure (expenditure) of the Ministry of Railways in FY 2022-23 stood at Rs 4,41,642.66 crore, which is 11.34 percent higher than the financial year 2021-22. This includes Rs 2,03,983.08 crore capital expenditure and Rs 2,37,659.58 crore revenue expenditure.
Passenger operations made due to profit of freight transportation
According to the report, 72.22 percent of the total working expenditure of the railway went to the employees’ salary, pension and leased coach/ engine fare payment. The CAG said that the coal stake in the freight of the railway was 50.42 percent. FY 2022-23 recorded a net surplus of Rs 2517.38 crore, while in FY 2021-22 it had a loss of Rs 15,024.58 crore. However, the loss of Rs 5257.07 crore in passenger operations was completed with the profit of freight.
Railways earns the most money from freight transportation
Let us tell you that freight is the biggest source of earning for Indian Railways. The Indian Railways earns many times more than the income from passenger services. In the financial year 2023-24, the Railways earned an income of Rs 1,68,293 crore from freight, while during this time only Rs 70,693 crore was earned from passenger services.
CAG report indicates many irregularities
The report presented in Parliament also pointed to irregularities in some budget and accounting control cases of the northwest, south east and southwest zone of Indian Railways, including the allocation of money and more than estimates in the item of closed projects.
