Reducing consumption of petrol and diesel will make transportation in India sustainable: Industry experts

New Delhi, October 22 (IANS). Along with the sale of vehicles in India, the consumption of petrol and diesel is at record levels. Whereas, electric vehicles are also being sold.

According to the Petroleum Ministry, sales of electric vehicles are gaining momentum, but it still accounts for only 6.85 percent of the total vehicles registered.

Industry experts said on Tuesday that enterprises are making efforts to incorporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) frameworks into their core business models.

They are trying to make transportation in India more sustainable by reducing the consumption of petroleum and diesel.

Mustafa Wajid, co-founder of Billion-e, who arrived at ‘NDTV World Summit-2024’, said, “Fossil fuels used for power generation and transportation are the two biggest problems. India will use about 150 million metric tons of petrol for transportation. And consumes diesel.”

Wajid said the group is trying to address the problem and has deployed “electric trucks.”

Mustafa Wajid also praised India’s carbon trading scheme, which is expected to be effective by 2026.

He said, “The government aims to create a carbon market like the stock market. It took a long time to build the stock market and digitization has happened only recently. The process is ongoing and policies are being formulated. We are optimistic, we will make it by 2026.” “I’ll see it start.”

Apart from this, industry experts also gave information about the challenges faced by companies in adhering to ESG.

According to Ajay Pillai, sustainability and climate change partner at Deloitte, the quality of data and the availability of reliable data to report, the level of awareness and expertise within the system, and the intention required from top management are key problems in adopting ESG practices.

Gagandeep Sethi, senior vice president of integrated operations and sustainability and accountability at Pernod Ricard India, said the company has a very comprehensive ESG program called “A Good Place to Get a Good Time.”

“It is fully aligned with ESG principles and the UN SDGs, including the core elements of nurturing the landscape, the land from which we derive all our resources. In everything we do, we must ensure What happens is that we restore that balance to the Earth.”

Sethi added, “We make products to delight customers, but we do it in a sustainable manner. At the same time, valuing people is also an essential element.”
