Rehabilitation center will be made for Madhuri in Kolhapur: ‘Vantara’ statement on Hathini case

Kolhapur: Independent animal rescue and rehabilitation center ‘Vantara’ has issued an important statement for the Jain Math and the people of Kolhapur, acknowledging the importance of the elephant named Mahadevi alias Madhuri. Madhuri has long been an integral part of the religious and cultural traditions of the Jain monastery. Vantara said in a statement that he has taken seriously the attachment to Madhuri and his concerns and respects it. Vantara clarified that the decision to move Madhuri was taken under the instructions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and Bombay High Court.

‘Vantara did not take the initiative to transfer Madhuri’

Vantara’s role was limited to Madhuri’s care, veterinary assistance and housing providing only. In this process, Vantara neither took the initiative to transfer nor had any intention of interfering in religious sentiments or traditions. Vantara has promised that if the Jain Math and Maharashtra government files an application in the court to bring Madhuri back to Kolhapur, it will fully support it. On the approval of the court, Vantara will provide technical and veterinary assistance for Madhuri’s safe and respectable return.

Proposal of new rehabilitation center in Kolhapur

Vantara has proposed to set up a satellite rehabilitation center for Madhuri in Nandani region of Kolhapur along with Jain Math and Government of Maharashtra. The center will be in line with international level animal welfare standards and will be built after consultation with Jain Math, High-Powered Committee experts and other stakeholders. The proposed center will have the following facilities:

  1. Hydrotherapy pond: To relieve joints and muscles.
  2. Big reservoir: For swimming and natural activities.
  3. Laser Therapy and Treatment Room: For physical rehabilitation.
  4. Shelter for night: For rest and safety.
  5. Open Green Plain: For independent movement without chains.
  6. Sand pit: For natural behavior and environmental prosperity.
  7. 24×7 Veterinary Clinic: For immediate medical care.
  8. Rubber containing: For safe and comfortable relaxation.
  9. Sandy mounds: To reduce foot problems, arthritis and pressure of joints.

Land for this center will be selected in collaboration with Jain Math and Maharashtra government. Vantara’s expert team is ready to start work immediately after getting the necessary permissions.

‘Not aim to catch or recognize Vantara’

Vantara insisted that the proposal is only to follow the instructions of the court and to ensure better care of Madhuri. Its purpose is not to provide any credit or identity to Vantara. Vantara is ready to welcome any alternative proposal from the Jain Math, provided it is in line with the final directions of the court. If the action taken under the court’s instructions has hurted the Jain community or the people of Kolhapur, then Vantara is an apology for this. The statement said, ‘Michhami Dukkadam, that is, if there is any pain in deliberately or unknown by thoughts, words or deeds, then we apologize.’
