Remembering the historic victory of Gaba, Rishabh Pant said, 'Rohit Bhai said - You don't know what you have done'

New Delhi, October 16 (IANS). India’s star wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant recalls his match-winning unbeaten inning of 89 against Australia at the Gabba during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which is considered one of the finest performances in Indian Test history.

Pant explained how Rohit Sharma’s words after this memorable innings really made him understand its importance.

He said, “I don’t know what to say about it. But, I always try to give my best. Sometimes, there are performances that you remember for the rest of your life, and for me, that was one of them. GABA test. At the time, I didn’t realize how important it was.

Pant told Star Sports, “Rohit bhai was there, and he said to me, you don’t know what you have done. And I was thinking, ‘What have I done? My aim was just to win the match.’ Said, ‘You will understand later what you have done.’ Now, whenever I hear people talking about the Gabba match, I understand what they meant and how important it was.”

Pant’s memorable innings came on the final day of the fourth Test, when India chased a challenging target of 328 runs. Their counter-attacking style not only led to a historic 3-wicket win, but also broke Australia’s 32-year winning streak at the Gabba as India took the series 2-1. However, at the time, Pant admitted that he did not fully understand the significance of what he had achieved.

The match at the Gabba was particularly important for India as they went into the field with a weakened team, with several key players injured. Pant’s innings reflected India’s never-say-die attitude throughout the series, making it one of the greatest comebacks in Test cricket.

With India set to tour Australia again for a five-match series starting November 22, Pant is keen to repeat his previous success on Australian soil.
