New Delhi, 23 November (Hindustan Reporter). Justice Fatima Beevi, the first woman judge of the Supreme Court, died on Thursday at the age of 96. He breathed his last on Thursday morning at a private hospital in Kollam district. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi have also expressed deep grief over the demise of Justice Fathima Bibi.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in his condolence message, said Justice Fathima Bibi was the first woman from the Muslim community to be part of the higher judiciary, as she was able to overcome the negative aspects of social conditions by seeing them as challenges. He said that her life is an inspiration for everyone, especially women. He said that he has been selected for the Kerala Prabha Award as a tribute.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi expressed deep grief over the demise of Justice M Fathima Beevi. In his condolence message, he said that Fatima Bibi will always be remembered for her contribution to public service. My condolences are with his family members in this hour of grief.

Became a judge in the Supreme Court in 1989

Fathima Biwi, after completing her schooling from Catholic High School in Pathanamthitta, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from a college in Thiruvananthapuram. He started working as a lawyer after completing his law degree from the Government Law College. After this, she became District and Sessions Judge in the year 1974 and joined the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal in 1980. He was appointed as a judge in the High Court in 1983. Her appointment as the first woman judge in the Supreme Court in 1989 created history. With this, she became the first Muslim woman in the higher judiciary and the first woman to become a Supreme Court judge in an Asian country. Justice Fatima Bibi retired on 24 April 1992 after serving as a Supreme Court judge for four years. After this she was also a member of the National Human Rights Commission and later the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
