Pope grew up in Francis Bario de Flores, which was a working class area. His father was a railway employee, his mother was a housewife. In his youth, the Pope studied in public schools and obtained a technical degree as a chemist in high school. From a young age, he dreams of becoming a pastor. When the Pope was 21, he became seriously ill with severe pneumonia and his right lung was partially removed. However, this did not affect his health or his life.
In 1958, George entered the Navadikiti of the Society of Jesus and two years later he took his first vow as Jesuit. In 1963, when returning to Buenos Aires, he studied philosophy at San Miguel Seminary. Between 1964 and 1965, he taught literature and psychology at a Jesuit Secondary School in Santa Fi, Argentina, and in 1966, he taught Buenos Aires’s prestigious Collegio Del Salvador Secondary School.
In 1967, he returned to his psychological study and was appointed a priest on 13 December 1969. Following his permanent profession as Jesuit in 1973, he became the master of the Navidikitas in San Miguel. Later the same year, he was chosen as Superior of Argentina and Jesuit province of Uruguay.
From 1979 to 1985, Father George served as a rector and theology teacher at Collegio Maximo before completing his doctoral thesis in Germany. In 1992, Father George was appointed as an assistant bishop of Buenos Aires. He was one of the three supporting bishops and spent most of his time to care for Catholic University, advice priests and give sermons and listen to confession.
On June 3, 1997, Bishop Bergoglio was named Koidjutar Archbishop. On 28 February 1998, he was appointed a new archbishop of Buenos Aires. As an arcabishop, he was simply known as ‘Father George’, and believed that the church was located on the road. He built chapels and missions in poor areas and sent seminars to serve them.
