Roshan was mastered by composing Qawwali
The name of composer Roshan is first taken in Hindi films whenever qawwali is mentioned. Although Roshan has composed all kinds of songs in films, he had mastered the composition of qawwalis.
In the superhit film ‘Barsat Ki Raat’ released in the year 1960, all the songs became popular. But under the music direction of Roshan, Manna Dey and Asha Bhonseli’s voice, Sahir Ludhianvi, ‘Na To Karanwa Ki Severe’ and ‘Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai’ in the voice of Mohammad Rafi are still leaving their indelible impression in the hearts of the audience.
In the film ‘Dil Hi To Hai Hai’ released in the year 1963, Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey’s couple of Roshan’s composed qawwwali ‘wanted to love’, the listeners are overwhelmed by hearing it whenever he echoes in fishes. Born on July 14, 1917 in the city of Gujrawalaan in Western Punjab (now in Pakistan), Roshan, born in a contractor’s house, was focused on his father’s profession since childhood and not to music. Roshan often used to go to the film due to the trend towards music. Meanwhile, he watched a film ‘Purana Bhagat’.
In the film, Roshan liked a hymn in the voice of singer Sehgal. He was so impressed by this hymn that he watched the film many times. By the age of eleven, he turned towards music and started teaching music from Ustad Manohar Barve. Manohar Barve also used to conduct the stage program, along with Roshan started participating in stage programs being held across the country. When Manohar Barve said on the stage, ‘Now I am going to present the biggest singing of the country in front of you’, then he would have become disappointed because he did not like the word ‘Gawaiya’.
By those days, Roshan was unable to decide whether to become a singer or a musician. After some time, Roshan left the house and went to Lucknow and started learning music from the headmaster of Ratan in ‘Morris College of Music’. After taking education of music for about five years, he came to Maihar and started teaching music from Ustad Allaudin Khan. One day Allaudin Khan asked Roshan, “How many hours you do a day.” Roshan proudly said, two hours a day and two hours in the evening. Hearing this, Allaudin Khan said that if you cannot do eight hours throughout the day, then pick up your boria bed and leave from here.
In the midst of all this, Roshan also took education of Sangi from Bundu Khan. Roshan started his career in the year 1940 as a musician at AIR Center, Delhi. In 1949, Roshan came to Mumbai from Delhi with a dream of becoming a film musician. After struggling for a year in Mayanagari Mumbai, he met well -known producer director Kedar Sharma.
Impressed by Roshan’s style of music, Kedar Sharma gave him the opportunity to work as a musician in his film ‘Neki Aur Badi’. Though Roshan could not succeed through his first film, he must start his cine career journey as a lyricist.
In the year 1950, Roshan once again got a chance to work in Kedar Sharma’s film ‘Bavre Nain’. After the success of Mukesh’s song ‘Teri Duniya Mein Dil Lag Nahi’ sung by Mukesh in the film ‘Bawre Nain, Roshan was successful in making his mark in the film world. Mukesh gave his voice the most to Roshan’s composed songs. Roshan’s pairing with lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi frozen a lot. The song and music of the pair of these two made the audience enthralled. These songs include ‘neither to caravan koi ki kahan hai’, ‘Life is not forgotten for the rainy night’, ‘Laga chunari in stain,’ Duniya kare kare ko to kya kya kya kya answer ‘, like sweet nagas.
Roshan was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Musician for the film ‘Taj Mahal’ released in 1963. This great musician Roshan, who drenched the Hindi cine world with his unmatched music, said goodbye to this world on 16 November 1967.
