RTO Simplifies Process: Three-Wheelers and Small Goods Vehicles Can Now Be Registered Online By Dealers

Pune, 2nd December 2024: The Transport Department has introduced an online registration system for fully built three-wheeler cargo vehicles and goods vehicles weighing less than 7.5 tonnes. Authorized vehicle dealers can now directly register these vehicles online, a move aimed at reducing dependency on Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). A circular regarding this change was recently issued by the department.

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has upgraded its “Vehicle 4.0” system to facilitate online registrations in accordance with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ provisions. Previously, online registration was limited to two-wheelers and passenger cars, while registrations for passenger and goods transport vehicles could only be processed at RTOs.

In response to growing demands for streamlined, digital-first services, the Transport Department has now enabled online registrations for specific categories of vehicles. These include tourist taxis (excluding metered taxis), fully built three-wheeler cargo vehicles, and company-manufactured goods transport vehicles with a gross load capacity under 7,500 kg.

However, the order clarifies that vehicles not fully constructed or those designated for passenger transport will still require physical registration at RTO offices. This initiative reflects the department’s ongoing efforts to make vehicle registration services more efficient and accessible for consumers while reducing administrative bottlenecks.
