Russia Violates International Law in Ukraine: Russia has suffered a major setback in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Europe’s top human rights court said in its judgment on Wednesday that Russia has severely violated international law in Ukraine. Also, the court has also blamed Russia for killing the aircraft MH 17 in 2014.
Ukrainian children kidnapped?
For the first time, an international court has blamed Moscow for human rights violations amidst Russia’s attacks on Ukraine. This is also the first time an international court has blamed Russia for the 2014 aircraft tragedy, in which 298 people lost their lives. These cases also include kidnapping of Ukrainian children.
MH17 accident or missile attack?
MH17 was a Boeing 777 aircraft flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet. As soon as the aircraft reached the Donnetsk region of Ukraine, it was killed by a missile. All 298 people aboard the aircraft were killed. The Donetsk region was under the control of the Russia -backed rebels at that time, who were struggling against the Ukrainian government. The Joint Investigation Team (JIT), which included a detailed investigation by Netherlands, Australia, Malaysia, Belgium and Ukraine. Investigations found that the aircraft was dropped from the “Buk” ground -to -air Russian missile.
Russia raises questions on the validity of JIT
The joint investigation team accused Russia of not only providing the missile, but the attack took place with the information and consent of the Russian officials. Russia rejected all these allegations and said that the attack would have been carried out by the Ukrainian Army. Russia described the investigation process as “politically motivated” and questioned the validity of the joint investigation team.
The case has arisen in the United Nations
Special meetings were held at the United Nations on MH17, but Russia used veto to prevent the investigation from moving forward. Families and human rights organizations of the victims strongly objected to Russia’s role. In 2022, a Dutch court convicted four people (three Russian citizens and one Ukrainian rebel) and sentenced them to life imprisonment in absence. However, the convicts are still in Russia or in unknown places and have not been produced in court.
