Life introduction of Saint Surdas ji: Sant Surdas ji was born in 1478 AD in Sihi village near Mathura. He was blind from birth, but he had deep reverence and unique poetry talent towards God. It is believed that he left home at a young age and came to Vrindavan and became absorbed in devotion to Shri Krishna.

His life was spent in the praise of Shri Krishna’s child pastimes and he gave a strong direction to the devotional movement. Surdas ji was a disciple of Vallabhacharya and was associated with the Pushtimarga sect. He composed more than 100,000 posts in his book called “Sur Sagar”, out of which only 8,000 are available today.

Importance of Saint Surdas Jayanti and its date in 2025: Saint Surdas Jayanti is celebrated every year on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month. In the year 2025, this birth anniversary is falling on 2 May 2025 (Friday). On this day, devotees pay homage to Surdas ji in Vrindavan, Mathura and temples across the country, recite his works and become absorbed in devotion.

Ocean of Krishnabhakti: ‘Sur Sagar’, ‘Sur Saravali’ and ‘Sahitya Lahiri’ are his major poetry works. He has uniquely depicted his divine dialogues with Lord Krishna’s baby form, teenage form, raslila, and gopis. In his poetry, the depth of Vatsalya juice and beauty of melody is seen together.

The language of Surdas ji was Braj Bhasha, which was the language of the common people at that time. He distinguished the Braj language at the literary level and this language is still used the most in the works related to Krishna devotion.
