Two men sentenced by Islamic Sharia court in Indonesia
Islamic Shariah Court in Indonesia: An Islamic Sharia court in Indonesia’s Orthodox Aseh province on Monday sentenced two men to publicly kill 80-80 cane for being involved in a sexual act. The lawsuit in the Islamic Sharia District Court of the provincial capital Banda Aseh went into a closed room. Judges have the right that if the matter is related to adultery, they can limit access to the public’s court proceedings and make it public only when the decisions are proclaimed.
People had given information to Sharia police
Both men (aged 20-21 years) were arrested in April when people saw him entering the same toilet in Banda Aseh’s Taman Sarah Park and informed the Sharia police patrolling the area. Police entered the toilet and caught the two men kissing and embracing each other, which the court considered a sexual act.
The government does not have the right to this
Aseh is considered more religious than other regions of Muslim -majority Indonesia. This is the only province where a version of the Islamic Sharia law is allowed to be implemented. Monday’s decision has been the 5th punishment for homosexuality to be beaten publicly for homosexuality since the Islamic law came into force in 2015. Indonesia’s national criminal code does not control homosexuality. However, the central government does not have the right to cancel Sharia law in Aseh.
