Bangkok: The dispute between Thailand and Cambodia on the border continues to grow. On Wednesday, Thailand closed several avenues along its north-eastern border with Cambodia and announced to withdraw its ambassador as well as expel Cambodia’s ambassador. The move was taken after a landmine tunnel (landmine) explosion, in which a Thailand soldier flew the leg. In response, Cambodia on Thursday announced to bring its diplomatic relationships with Thailand to the lowest level and recall all the employees of their Bangkok Embassy.

Cambodia’s soldier was killed in battle

Let us tell you that the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia is tense since May, when a soldier of Cambodia was killed in an armed clash. The clash took place in a small area on which the two countries claim their own. After this incident, nationalist sentiments erupted in the two countries, which further worsened the situation. The Prime Minister of Thailand was suspended on 1 July to investigate questions related to morality on how to deal with this border dispute.

Many Thai soldiers injured in landmine

According to the Thai army, 5 soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion in Ubon Ratchathani province on Wednesday, in which a soldier’s leg flew. Cambodia says that the explosion occurred in his beloved Viar province. Earlier, last week, 3 Thai soldiers were injured when a landmine exploded in another disputed area, and a soldier’s leg was also flew in the incident. Thailand claims that these tunnels were recently laid and were on the paths that both countries considered safe for patrolling. Thai officials say these are Russia -made landmines, which are not with the Thai army.

Thailand made serious allegations against Cambodia

The Thai army has issued a statement demanding Cambodia to take responsibility for the incident. The army said, “This incident is a serious threat to peace and stability on the border of both countries.” Thailand accused Cambodia of violating the 1997 Ottawa Treaty, prohibiting the production and use of landmine. Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Fummam Vachayachai said that the Ministry of External Affairs would file a formal complaint against Cambodia and further action will be considered.

‘Blast on Cambodia land’

Cambodia dismissed these allegations as ‘baseless’. Lieutenant General Mali Sochaita, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense of Cambodia, said that the blast occurred on the land of Cambodia and the Thai soldiers violated the 2000 agreement and wandered from the fixed routes to the area of Cambodia. Cambodia says that many landmines on the border are the results of the 20th century wars and unrest, not recently.

Cracks in diplomatic relations of both countries

Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Thursday, ordering all the diplomatic employees of Thailand to leave the country and recall the employees of their Bangkok Embassy. After the clash in May, the two countries had closed several border posts or imposed restrictions on them. Cambodia has stopped imports of fruits, vegetables, fuel and gas from Thailand. In addition, Thai films and TV shows have been banned and some international internet and power supply links have also been discontinued. (AP)
