Seoul: Opposition candidate in South Korea Lee J-Mayang was elected President late Tuesday night. It is not clear whether Lee’s election will bring any major and immediate change in South Korea’s foreign policy.

What are the challenges in front of the new President?

Lee was accused of leaning towards China and North Korea by first critics and staying away from America and Japan. Lee has repeatedly emphasized that South Korea’s alliance with America is the basis of its foreign policy. The most difficult external challenges facing the new President of South Korea are the tax policy of US President Donald Trump and the growing nuclear program of North Korea. However, experts say that whoever becomes President will not be able to do anything special to ensure great progress in South Korea’s favor on these issues.

Kim had given up before the announcement

He said, “We should move forward with hope and start a new beginning from this moment.” The victorious candidate will be immediately sworn in as the President on Wednesday.

Who is the new President of South Korea?

Li J-Mang’s life has been an inspirational story from poverty to richness. He once worked as a laborer in the factory, then became a human rights lawyer and has now been elected the new President of the country. Born in 1963 in a remote hill village in Endong, Gyongbook province, he belongs to a poor family. Lee suffered defeat in the election by a slight margin in the 2022 election. At that time his party was at number three.

Lee was previously a human rights lawyer, although he later became a politician. Myang has played a major role in the impeachment against former President Yu and that is why he was made the presidential candidate by the party. (AP)
