Colombo: The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister has given a big statement amidst the ongoing controversy over Kachtivu Dwip. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijita Herath has said that her country has no intention of leaving the island of Kachhativu. Herath said in a conversation with Sirasa TV, “Our diplomatic medium to resolve this issue is that Sri Lanka will never agree to leave Kuthativu.”

Know what is the controversy of Kachhativu Island

The island island is at the south end of India in the Indian Ocean. Spread over 285 acres, the island is located between Rameswaram and Sri Lanka in India. In the 17th century, the island was under King Ramanand of Madurai. During the British rule, the island of Kachtivu came to the Madras Presidency. Both India and Sri Lanka used to claim their own on the island for fishing. After independence, 4 agreements were made between 1974-76 over the sea border. Under the agreement, Indian fishermen were allowed to rest on the island and dry the nets and the island was handed over to Sri Lanka.
