New Delhi: State Formation Day refers to the foundation day of any state in India. It is an important occasion that highlights the rich history and heritage of that state. In other words, State Foundation Day is an annual celebration that marks the formation of a state and commemorates its history, culture and identity. In India (a diverse country), the history of each state foundation day varies, with some states having been recognized centuries ago and others more recently. In 1947, India’s political landscape was very different from what it is today. In this article, we will share how a state is formed and what is the criteria.
How a state is formed and what is the criteria?
While India was divided between provinces during the British occupation, the country was directly governed by the British administration and princely kingdoms, which were ruled by regional monarchs. However, these regional kings were governed by the British. Post India’s independence, it was an arduous undertaking for the newly elected government to incorporate all the princely kingdoms into the Indian federation.
Between 1947 and 1950, all of the princely states were incorporated into the Indian Union. This apart, many of the previous princely states were either transformed into new states or united with the nation’s existing provinces.

About states
India (made up of states, districts and mandals) was were not believed to be static, unchanging, or permanent by the framers of the Indian Constitution. While one of the unique characteristics of the Union of India is that it cannot be destroyed, the power granted to Parliament also allows it to merge a portion of union territory or with another to create a new state or union territory. It should be mentioned that Parliament has the power to eliminate or change a State’s identity.
