Beijing: A Chinese university has expelled one of his students on charges of ‘hurting national honors’ for having a relationship with a foreign man. Dalian Polytechnic University said that the student ‘inappropriate behavior’ with a foreign man, causing damage to the country’s reputation. This decision has launched a new debate on China’s social media, where people are questioning this step of the university. The university issued a notice last week saying that on 16 December 2024, the student’s ‘wrong behavior’ was affected in the society.
Thousands criticized the university
The university did not say in the notice what the student had done. The university also made the student’s name public, but due to privacy, we are not printing her here. The university said that the student will be expelled in 60 days. The news caused a storm on China’s social media platforms such as Shaohongshu and Douyin (Chinese version of tickets). Thousands of people criticized the university’s decision in comments. Many users called it a ‘talibani’ decision, in which university or society asserts the right to a woman’s personal life.
Government newspaper also raised questions
Some people described it as discrimination against women and questioned that if a Chinese male had done this with a foreign woman, would she be considered ‘national pride’? Shanghai official newspaper The Paper also questioned the university’s decision. The newspaper wrote that the student’s name was ‘wrong’ and it could be a violation of China’s Personal Information Protection Law. The newspaper said, “It is not right to take a decision on them by making private matters public.”
Connection related to foreign gamer Teslenko!
Some people on social media connected the matter to Ukraine’s professional game Danilo Teslenko. Teslenco is known as Juice and recently posted some videos on Telegram, in which he appeared in a hotel room with an Asian girl. However, it is not sure that the girl seen in the video is the same student. Teslenko clarified in a post on X on Sunday, saying, “I had posted some video on Telegram with a girl found in Shanghai, but as soon as I understood the seriousness of the situation, I removed them.”
‘There was no objectionable thing in the video’
Teslenko also said that there was no objectionable or derogatory thing in the video, nor did he ever say that ‘Chinese girls are easy to achieve’. According to reports, Teslenko and the student met in December 2024 in the final of a gaming tournament named Perfect World Shanghai Major. Email was sent to Dalian Polytechnic University, but no response has been received yet. People are now waiting for whether the university will remain on its decision or will there be any effect on the protest on social media. (AP)
